Unless we take care to prevent reradiation, we cannot raise the temperature of an object very much above the Earth's mean temperature. The Meinels propose to take advantage of recent technology that has made it possible to manufacture interference filters inexpensively [Technical Note 2-5]. Properly designed, these filters will allow sunlight to pass through them but only allow 2% of the infrared light to escape. Thus the temperature of the collecting surface can exceed that of the Earth and can be raised to 1260° F, a temperature high enough to operate a conventional steam-generating power station.

Energy Fig. 1-6 Not all of the chemical energy in the coal is recovered in the form of electrical energy. The losses are substantial: (1) Not all of the heat from the burning coal produces the steam. There is heat loss at the walls of the furnace and elsewhere. (2) Not all of the steam does "productive" work. It cools down a bit, there are losses due to internal friction in the gas, etc. (3) Friction in the turbine blades and generator produces waste heat. The wires conducting the electricity have a certain amount of electrical resistance which causes energy losses in the form of heat as the electricity is transmitted to the home.

Thanks to quantum theory and confirming experiments, we now know that the wave concept is correct and in other circumstances the particle concept is correct. An individual particle in a light beam is called a photon. Whether viewed as a moving electromagnetic wave or a beam of photons, light travels at a speed of approximately 186,000 miles/sec. This statement applies to the entire electromagnetic spectrum. A gamma ray is a high-energy photon, and it too moves at 186,000 miles/sec. Because it appears so often, by convention, the speed of light is represented by the letter c.
