Glaze is the term used for paint mixed with a transparent medium. Glazes are traditionally used to build up transparent layers of color. Because of the exceptionally wide range of acrylic mediums now available, the value of using glazes is not limited to issues of transparency. Glazes can be used to alter the sheen of a painting, or a portion of a painting, as well as the viscosity or working consistency of paint. Golden Self Leveling Clear Gel, for example, can be used to mix a glaze that flattens out as it dries, eliminating brushstrokes.

Heavy and Extra Heavy Gels add thickness and body to paint, will hold peaks for impasto effects, and will generally increase the appearance of brushstrokes and marks made with palette knives. Self Leveling Clear Gel has a resinous consistency that flattens out and dries to a clear, glossy, flexible film. When added to fluid acrylics, it eliminates brushstrokes entirely and increases transparency. Because of its leveling properties, it is also a good choice for creating acrylic skins. { PASTES } Unlike gels, pastes are opaque.

If needed, use a spray bottle to wet the paper slightly and help loosen it. STEP 7: Allow the transfer to dry fully and then apply a new layer of fluid medium to seal the image. STEP 8: The image may now be treated with transparent glazes or used as a ground sketch for a new painting. Tip: Keep in mind that the transfer process reverses images. This may be helpful with creating variations of your existing artwork. But if your image includes text, be sure to reverse it using a computer program such as Photoshop before making copies.
